Know all about UIDAI Aadhaar card including its eligibility, documentation requirement, application process, Aadhaar card download, benefits, link with PAN and more.
With the establishment of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UDAI) on 12 July 2016 by the Government of India, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the main objective was to promote and offer reliable, translucent and exemplary government services to the residents of India. Keeping this objective in mind, an initiative to provide subsidiary services to the people of India was undertaken by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). This initiative was known as the Aadhaar card. Prior to its establishment as a statutory authority, UIDAI was functioning as an attached office of the then Planning Commission (now NITI Aayog) vide its Gazette Notification No.-A-43011/02/2009-Admn.I) dated 28th January, 2009. The first UID number was issued on 29 September 2010 to a resident of Nandurbar, Maharashtra.
Uniqueness is achieved through the process of demographic and biometric de-duplication. During the enrolment process, the resident’s demographic and biometric information is compared with the records in the UIDAI database to determine if they are already registered. Aadhaar is generated only once after successful de-duplication. If a resident attempts to enrol multiple times, the subsequent enrolments will be rejected.
Aadhaar provides nationwide portability as it can be authenticated online from anywhere. This is particularly important as millions of Indians migrate between states or from rural areas to urban centers.
The Aadhaar number is a random number without any specific meaning. During enrolment, individuals are only required to provide minimal demographic and biometric information. Details such as caste, religion, income, health, and geography are not captured during the process.
The UID architecture is designed to be open and scalable. Resident data is stored centrally, allowing for online authentication from anywhere in the country. The Aadhaar Authentication service is capable of handling 100 million authentications per day.
The use of open source technologies in the Aadhaar system eliminates the need for specific hardware, storage, operating systems, database vendors, or any specific vendor technologies to scale. Applications are developed using open source or open technologies, ensuring scalability in a vendor-neutral manner and allowing for the coexistence of different hardware within the same application.
1. Each individual is assigned a unique Aadhaar number based on their individual biometrics, ensuring that no two residents can have the same number. This helps to eliminate ghost and fake identities, preventing leakages and allowing the government to extend benefits to eligible residents.
2. The “Introducer” system approved for data verification by UIDAI helps poor and marginalized residents establish an identity and access government benefits, even if they do not possess the necessary identification documents.
3. The UID-enabled bank account network provides a low-cost and secure platform for electronic benefit transfers, eliminating the high costs associated with traditional benefit distribution and preventing leakages in the system.
4. Agencies can use UIDAI’s online authentication services to validate a resident’s identity and confirm that entitlements are reaching the intended beneficiary, increasing transparency and accountability.
5. With Aadhaar’s authentication mechanism, residents can access information about their entitlements and demand services, and address grievances directly from their mobile phones or other means. Two-factor authentication ensures security and compliance with standards.
Identity Card:
The Aadhaar card serves as a valid identity card for Indian citizens. As it is linked to other identity cards like PAN, it has gradually become the primary card accepted nationwide. By possessing an Aadhaar card, there is no need to apply or register for any other card to access various services.
For instance, an Aadhaar card can be utilized as proof of identity, address, and age when applying for government services. This makes it an incredibly versatile card, applicable for all government-related programs and services.
Availing of Subsidies:
One of the significant advantages of the Aadhaar card is that it enables the holder to avail themselves of all eligible government subsidies. Since the government already possesses the necessary data of individuals, they only need to present their Aadhaar card to access various subsidies and programs.
The government has introduced schemes where the Aadhaar card can be linked to bank accounts and LPG connections. This allows individuals to receive their LPG subsidy directly into their bank accounts, eliminating the possibility of fund misappropriation or fraudulent claims for personal benefits.
