Aadhaar, a unique 12-digit identity number, can be obtained by Indian citizens and permanent foreign nationals who have spent over 182 days in the preceding twelve months before applying for registration. This number is based on biometric and demographic data.
Now, let’s delve into the concept of a virtual ID and the process of generating it. As per the circular released by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), a virtual ID is a 16-digit number that can be used interchangeably with your Aadhaar number.
To generate a virtual ID, individuals are required to utilize this 16-digit number instead of their Aadhaar number. This step ensures that Aadhaar holders can access products and services while also addressing concerns related to the storage of Aadhaar numbers by various private entities, which has raised privacy issues.
The Virtual ID number is a unique number that is assigned to your Aadhaar number. It serves as a replacement for your Aadhaar number, which may raise concerns about privacy. To generate a Virtual ID, it is mandatory to link your mobile number with your Aadhaar number. Once you provide your Virtual ID to an authentication agency, such as government agencies and telecom companies, they will use it to generate a UIDAI token. This token will be used to authenticate your demographic details, such as your name, phone number, and address, without revealing your Aadhaar number.
Any individual with an Aadhaar can access the UIDAI website to generate a Virtual ID (VID). The generated VID remains valid for a specified duration or until the user opts to modify it.
Users have the flexibility to generate a VID based on their specific needs. Once a new Virtual ID is generated, it automatically replaces the previous one. Additionally, the option to generate or replace VIDs is also available on the Aadhaar mobile application and at enrolment centers.
To carry out the VID generation process, follow these steps:
The security concerns surrounding Aadhaar data have been a topic of discussion since the UPA government introduced the concept. However, the repeated reports of data breaches have caused the public to lose faith. The introduction of the limited KYC system and Virtual ID could help to restore confidence in the system. While the additional security measures are necessary, they can make it challenging for authenticating agencies to access the Aadhaar number. The creation of Virtual IDs and UID tokens through VID generation provides an extra layer of protection and confirms the mapping of the Aadhaar number. Each agency is given a Unique Identification Token to ensure secure and efficient validation of the required Aadhaar number.
Step 1:
Visit the official UIDAI website at https://uidai.gov.in/.
Step2:
From the list of Aadhaar services available under the ‘My Aadhaar’ tab, select ‘Virtual ID (VID) Generator’.
Step 3:
A window titled ‘Generate or Retrieve VID’ will appear. Choose ‘Generate VID’.
Step 4:
Enter your Aadhaar number and the captcha code in the provided fields.
Step 5:
Click on ‘Send OTP’. After the OTP (One-Time Password) verification process, UIDAI will generate a Virtual ID and notify you with a message stating “Virtual ID is sent to your registered mobile number”. The VID can also be generated using the mAadhaar app.
