Aadhaar is considered one of the most referred documents which act as proof of identity and proof of address. In this regard, there is always a question on its security breach and leaking of personal data. For this, the UIDAI has come up with the facility to lock/unlock Aadhaar services online. There are different Aadhaar services offered by the UIDAI such as- Verify Aadhaar, Verify Registered Mobile or e-Mail ID, Retrieve Aadhaar, Generate Virtual ID, Offline Aadhaar Verification, Aadhaar Linking Status, Authentication History, and other related Aadhaar services.
Authentication Limitations:
Once you lock your Aadhaar services, traditional authentication methods using the Aadhaar number will be disabled. Instead, you’ll need to use the Virtual ID (VID) for authentication.
Availability of VID:
Ensure that you possess the latest VID. If not, residents can retrieve their existing VID by sending an SMS with the format ‘RVID Last 4 or 8 digits of UID’ to 1947.
Mandatory VID for UID Lock/Unlock:
Keep in mind that a Virtual ID (VID) is a prerequisite for both locking and unlocking your UID. Make sure you have your VID ready before initiating any lock or unlock requests.
