PAN, or Permanent Account Number, stands as a crucial requirement for the majority of Indian citizens and commercial entities, particularly those obligated to pay income tax and identified under the Income Tax Act of 1961. This distinctive 10-digit alphanumeric identification code serves as a comprehensive tracker for all monetary transactions and is issued by the Indian Income Tax Department under the vigilant oversight of the Central Board for Direct Taxes (CBDT).
Individuals, companies, entities incorporated in India, as well as unincorporated entities formed in India, are mandated to complete PAN card Form 49A to obtain a PAN card. This form is obtainable from various sources, including any IT PAN Service Centre (managed by UTIITSL), TIN-Facilitation Centre (TIN-FCs)/ PAN Centre (managed by NSDL e-Gov), authorized stationery vendors, or it can be downloaded from the UTIITSL/NSDL/Income Tax Department websites. Once duly filled, the form is to be submitted alongside the requisite documents either to the authorized PAN agency in the district or online through the NSDL or UTI portal.
The Income Tax Department provides PAN application forms for the allocation of new PAN cards, catering to different categories of applicants. Below are the prescribed forms:
PAN Card Form 49A:
PAN Card Form 49AA:
Both PAN card forms are available for download in PDF format, suitable for submission as hard copies. Additionally, these forms are provided in a fillable format for convenient online application submission through the official websites of NSDL and UTIITSL.
Form 49A for PAN card application comprises 17 sections and various sub-sections. Below are the key details that need to be diligently filled in PAN Card Form 49A:
Assessing Officer Code:
Fill in the AO Code, which includes Area Code, Range Code, AO Type, and AO number for the PAN Card application.
Full Name:
Enter your full name without abbreviations. Avoid the use of abbreviations in your name.
Abbreviations of Full Name for PAN Card:
Specify any desired abbreviations for your first and middle names on the PAN Card. Note that only the first and middle names can be abbreviated, not the last name.
Other Name:
Indicate if you have been known by any other name. Provide details without abbreviations.
Gender:
Specify your gender (for individual applicants only).
Date of Birth:
Fill in your date of birth in the DDMMYYYY format.
Information about Parents:
Provide details of parents as required, including options for a single mother.
Address:
Fill in both residential and office addresses with complete details.
Address for Communication:
Indicate if the communication address is residence or office.
Email ID and Telephone Number:
Provide your email ID and telephone number with ISD and STD codes.
Status of Applicant:
Specify the status of the applicant (e.g., Individual, Company, Partnership Firm, etc.).
Registration Number:
Companies, firms, and LLPs should fill in the registration number.
Aadhaar Number:
If you have an Aadhaar Card, quote the Aadhaar number or Enrolment ID as per Section 139 AA.
Source of Income:
Mention your source of income and, if applicable, provide the Business or Profession Code.
Representative Assessee (RA):
If applicable, provide the name and address of the Representative Assessee under Section 160 of the Income Tax Act.
Documents Required:
Specify the documents attached as Proof of Address (POA), Proof of Identity (POI), and Proof of Date of Birth with Form 49A.
Legibility:
Complete the application in BLOCK letters, preferably using black ink.
Mandatory Fields:
Ensure all mandatory fields are filled out.
Titles and Abbreviations:
Select an appropriate title and avoid using abbreviations in the first and last name.
For companies, mention the name without abbreviations.
In the case of sole proprietorship, the name should not be prefixed.
Photographs:
Affix photographs in the designated spaces.
Consistency with Proof Documents:
Fill in name, address, and date of birth details exactly as per the proof documents enclosed.
Document Checklist:
Review the accepted proof documents checklist to prevent rejection or delays in PAN Card processing.
Representative Assessee:
If applicable, the representative assessee must provide proof of address and proof of identity.
